Luckily we fluked a bye in the first round of this years Beckly Cup which got us to this round against BATS at our place. For those who don't know, its a different format to league games. All games are mixed. All 3 pairs play each other, instead of best of 3 games we just play 2 games. All points scored are added up cumulitively and totalled at the end. Finally an envelope is opened with a handicap of plus X points to the team with the weakest league position, also taking into account missing or additional players and the home advantage. Anyway, to cut a long story short.....excellent games, all of which were close. Final scores were Torpoint 187 - BATS 196. Torpoint got +72 hanicap and won the match 259 - 196 overall. We progress to the semi-final!!!!

It was our turn to make the long drive at night and bad weather throught the lanes to Bere Alston. Luckily there was no fog and we made it there fine to face the same young BATS team we played earlier in the season. A couple of changes to our team again, meant Laurie played his first match for the club, unfortunately at very short notice. Carol & Lesley also stood in for the ladies. After a number a good games (even with plastic shuttles) and a good fight from the young side we finally came away with a 2-7 victory. Thanks again to Laurie, Rod, Lesley and Carol for playing mostly at short notice. Oh I had no picture so here are some bats.....
YMCA B v Torpoint - 9th Dec 06

A completely fresh looking team for this match as it was Torpoint Badminton Christmas Party night and half the usual team were going. (We'd much rather be playing badminton than getting drunk and snogging Mike). But it was a good opportunity for other regular club members to experience a competitive match (and eat the usual good spread at YMCA!). All games were good but a particular shout out to Carol, Wendy and Anne who took 2 games off YMCA, which isnt easy when you take into account YMCAs experience, home advantage and plastic shuttle practice....... Final score 7-2 win to YMCA B.
A big thank you to all that played, especially at short notice.
Didnt take a picture, so heres a lovely one of Mike

Another good match against a very strong Devonshire side. Having recently emalgamated the two different Devonshire clubs, they now have a strong group of players to pick from and they certainly brought them. A very friendly and fair team, and all the games were very close. Although not a permanent change, we are looking to introduce others to matchplay, a notable excellent debut from Lesley, she played very well. Three matches went to 3 games and we were unlucky not to snatch at least one of them. Both teams noticed the shuttles were particularly fast but no excuses they beat us fair and square, although the scoreline does not reflect how close the match was in any way. Final score 9-0 win to Devonshire!! We'll have em at their place.......

Its always enjoyable to play the University as they bring with them players from other parts of the country with alot of talent, making for some very difficult games. Tonights was no exception! Joe & Simon won the first, and were very happy with their performance, playing well together as a pair. Joe & Dan also played very well together but well well matched by the Uni students. It went to three and was very close losing 11-15 in the third. JT broke his 2 week old raquet during this match but it must be noted it wasnt through anger, just a clash of raquets! All the ladies played very well and showed the students that experience counts for a lot. The first two of three mixeds were won by Torpoint and the third was looking good for Dan & Joan when the game was ended early as court time had run out at the Mayflower Centre and the game conceeded to Torpoint. Final score 8-1 win to Torpoint!!

BATS fielded an encouragingly young side again, reassuring us that badminton is still fun for younger generations to take up. Alan Berry being the only experienced player in the BATS team did not make it a pure walkover, their up and coming new players fought for every point and certainly did themselves justice. Alan made a nice comment that 'Torpoint players appreciated playing the youngsters and allowed some good long rallies to develop.' Final score 9-0 win to Torpoint, by no means a reflection of the young players.
Torpoint v Builders - 18 Oct 2006

A twisted ankle to Andy from builders in the 3rd match contributed to the men winning all three of their games although they had already won the first two. Whilst the ladies had it tougher and won one out of three of theirs. As Andy was still injured, one mixed was an automatic win for Torpoint but the other two matches were far from automatic!! Dan & Julie had a close game but unfortunately lost 11-15, 9-15, and the first mixed was very very close, with Joe & Audrey forcing a third decider at 17-14 and pulling through to win the third 15-13. All in all, excellent games and a friendly team to play. Final score 6-3 win to Torpoint!!
